How Do You Remove A Tooth?

Tooth extractions in Arlington Heights ILOccasionally, you may be surprised to learn that the key to maintaining a healthy smile is to actually have a tooth removed. We call these dental extractions, and they can be used to address a variety of serious oral health complications, including wisdom teeth eruption. How do we remove a tooth?

Ensuring a Comfortable Extraction

First, we always employ a local anesthetic prior to removing the tooth. Should you suffer from dental anxiety, which impacts between 8% and 15% of patients in the United States, we may also recommend nitrous oxide to help you enter a calm and relaxed state. We want our patients to enjoy a comfortable experience, during which we will be glad to address any questions or concerns you may have.

Addressing Wisdom Teeth

We often try to remove the wisdom teeth, which typically erupt in the late teens to early 20s. For some, the arrival of four extra molars is no big deal, but for many this could mean the onset of misalignment, discomfort, dental infection, or damaged teeth. Fortunately, we can remove them before they even arrive.

Broken or Infected Teeth

When a tooth become infected, we can recommend treatment to save the tooth and address the infection. However, if a patient doesn’t see us in time and the infection causes the tooth to die, then we may need to perform an extraction to stop the spread of infection to other teeth. In addition, a severely damaged tooth may need to be removed completely.

Replacing Extracted Teeth

Obviously with wisdom teeth we don’t need to replace the tooth, but what if we removed one due to infection or damage? In these situations, we can often replace the lost teeth with a dental implant.
