Answers to Oral Hygiene Quiz

  1. False! Gently brushing your teeth at varying angles for a full two minutes with a soft bristled brush will remove food debris to prevent plaque build up. Brushing too vigorously can damage your gums and over time may lead to gum recession. Brushing gently, like a gentle massage cleans the gums and teeth, reduces halitosis, and protects your smile from unnecessary damage.
  2. False! Flossing thoroughly at least once every day can help patients prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health conditions. Flossing is an important part of your at-home oral hygiene routine and should be taken seriously. If you need tips on proper brushing or flossing techniques as your AH Smile dental care team during your next oral health exam.
  3. True! Gum disease is most commonly caused by poor oral hygiene. Both children and adults are susceptible to developing gum disease. Brushing, flossing, and biannual dental health exams can help prevent gum disease and allows Dr. Engelberg to diagnose the disease in its earliest stage, gingivitis. Early diagnosis can prevent secondary conditions from developing.
  4. False! It is recommended by the American Dental Association as well as Dr. Engelberg to change your toothbrush once every 2-3 months. Changing your toothbrush helps to keep your brush bacteria free, and effective.
  5. True! Tooth decay is caused by enamel erosion brought on by the acidic byproduct left behind by bacteria. Bacteria feed on plaque and tartar and spread throughout the mouth. Caught early, tooth decay can be conservatively removed and treated using a dental filling. Once the enamel is compromised by the acidic byproduct, the tooth becomes susceptible to infection and may require more advanced treatment such as a root canal or extraction.
