What Are Inlays and Onlays?

onlays cosmetic dentist Arlington Heights ILTooth decay is an extremely common dental issue that nearly everyone deals with at some point. As a result, there is a range of treatment options available to address the damage caused by tooth decay. Choosing the best treatment option for you usually depends on the severity of the damage and its location in your mouth. For treatment that requires more coverage than a basic filling but less than a full dental crown, dental inlays and onlays are often the perfect solutions. Also known as indirect restorations or partial crowns, these specialized, custom-fitted fillings help provide damaged teeth with much-needed strength and stability and also help stop future decay or infection.

Dr. Brent Engelberg and Dr. Oleari are both experienced cosmetic and restorative dentists. They only use high-quality ceramic or porcelain materials for all dental restorations, including inlays and onlays. At AH Smiles, we will work with you to design a treatment to address tooth decay and restore your healthy smile.

What are Inlays?

Inlays are pre-molded fillings that are used to cover larger areas of damage in the grooves of a tooth, without extending over its edge or cusp. They support the structural integrity of a tooth, providing strength in teeth that have been weakened by extensive decay. Inlays also help seal off the damaged portion of the tooth to stop the development of decay or infection in the future.

What are Onlays?

Onlays can be used to repair the damage that extends beyond a tooth’s cusp. They are frequently fitted into the grooves and crevices of molars. These areas can be difficult to clean, leading plaque and bacteria to build up and cause decay.

What to Expect

Both inlays and onlays require two visits to complete. On the first visit, the dentist will prepare the surface of your teeth by removing any decay and then taking impressions to create your custom filling. After you return for the second visit, the permanent restoration will be fitted and sealed.
