Don’t ignore a broken tooth!

Whether on the court or at the food court, an accident or a hard piece of food can potentially damage a tooth. When this happens, we suggest seeing a dentist as soon as possible. Even if the damage seems minor, your tooth could be at risk of developing decay after mouth trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions About Broken Teeth

Will a broken tooth develop decay?

In some cases, yes. If the damage allows bacteria to bypass the protective layer of tooth enamel and reach the more sensitive layers of dentin beneath, a cavity can form. Eventually, the decay will continue to spread until the patient experiences serious discomfort and potentially, an infection.

Will bonding repair my tooth?

Yes. If you have a broken tooth we can often apply several layers of composite resin, the same material used in our white fillings. The material can be shaded to match your tooth. As it cures under a light, the doctor can also sculpt the tooth. After curing, the tooth is thoroughly polished for a more lifelike appearance.

When do I need a crown?

If the damage is more severe, or if the tooth is fractured, you may need a dental crown. The restoration is made from ceramic and fits over the visible portion of the tooth. As with bonding, we can complete the placement in a single visit.

What should I do before I see my dentist?

Try to gather up any pieces of your tooth (if possible) and bring them to the office. On the way, you can apply a cold compress to the side of the face to reduce swelling, or gauze to stem any bleeding.

Can dental bonding be touched up?

Bonds can be touched up or fixed if you find that there is an issue. This can help strengthen bonds so that they last longer. It also can improve the appearance of your bond without replacing it completely.

How long does dental bonding last?

On average dental bonding lasts between 3-10 years. The length of the materials’ life depends on its placement, the patients oral care and diet, and the type of material used.

What can bonding be used for?

Bonds are used to improve the structural and visual appearance of teeth. They are often used to repair cracks, and chips in teeth. They may also be used to correct stains, and gaps between teeth.

"My dentist for 25 to 30 years was Dr. William Uhler. Bill eventually retired and sold his practice to Dr. Engelberg. Initially, I thought, " What the heck am I going to do if I have a tooth ache; if all my crowns, bridges and implants decide to retire with Dr. Uhler"? Well folks, enter Brent A. Engelberg, D.D.S.. My teeth and gums have a new friend, a super-pro who knows exactly what he is doing. His procedural technique is always accompanied by calming explanation. Indeed, this fits with his personality: caring, tolerant, perceptive and really empathetic. DR. Brent's staff, well, their marvelous too! Thank you, Dr. larry j. Powitz"Larry P.

Tooth Bonding What to Expect

Cosmetic tooth bonding is basically the same process as a resin dental filling, and is typically completed during a single visit to our dentist office. Dr. Engelberg will prepare the surface of the tooth (or teeth) to be treated, directly apply a tooth-colored resin, and sculpt it into the desired shape for a natural result that can last for several years or more with proper dental care.

Dental bonding is often covered by dental insurance when addressing tooth damage or a dental health concern, but is also an alternative to the more expensive option of dental veneers. We will discuss all aspects of your dental bonding procedure, including cost, prior to your treatment. We accept most dental insurance and work with patients to estimate their portion of the total cost.
