You brush and floss twice a day to keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean. But are you giving the same care to your toothbrush? Keeping your toothbrush clean and healthy is essential for your oral health. Arlington Heights dentist Dr. Brent Engelberg offers some tips on how to keep your toothbrush performing for your best oral health.
Toothbrush Care Tips
- Toothbrush Storage: Where and how you store your toothbrush is important. Never keep your toothbrush in a case or in a dark place. Damp dark places are ideal for bacteria growth. Bacteria from your toothbrush can contribute to the development of gum disease or tooth decay. Keep your toothbrush at least six feet away from your toilet to avoid catching airborne particles with your bristles.
- Rinse After Use: It is a good idea to rinse your toothbrush off after each use. Your toothbrush works to remove bacteria and food particles from your teeth and gums and so it is a good idea to rinse that off of your brush. Between each use you can rinse your brush thoroughly with water.
- Let It Dry: Make sure you keep your brush bristle side up in the open air. It is important for your toothbrush to get the chance to dry out to avoid bacteria growth. If your toothbrush is stored with others, be sure they do not touch to avoid spreading germs. Never use someone else’s toothbrush as this can lead to the spread of bacteria that causes gum disease.
- Replace Often: Dr. Engelberg recommends replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Replacing your brush every 3-4 months keeps bacteria from having a chance to take over your bristles. In addition, after about three months the bristles begin to break down and do not clean as effectively. A new clean brush every few months help keep your smile clean and fresh.
