If the thought of a dental appointment makes your stomach turn, you are far from alone. Studies show that between 50% and 80% of U.S. adults experience some level of dental anxiety. This fear ranges from mild unease to a phobia so severe that it prevents people from seeking care for years.
We understand those fears. Whether it’s a bad past experience, fear of pain, or the sounds and smells of the dental office, we know how real those feelings can be. That’s why our goal is to create an anxiety-free environment where you feel safe, respected, and in control.

The Many Faces of Dental Fear
Dental anxiety doesn’t look the same for everyone. Common triggers include:
- Fear of pain or needles
- Feeling vulnerable or out of control
- Negative past dental experiences
- Embarrassment about the condition of your teeth
- Sensitivity to dental sounds and smells
Whatever your specific concern, we want you to know it’s valid. We don’t dismiss fears or tell you to “just relax.” Instead, we listen, we adapt, and we work with you to make your visit as comfortable as possible.
Communication Comes First
The most important tool we have isn’t a drill or a laser. It’s communication.
Before we start any treatment, we talk to you about what to expect. We explain what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how it will feel. If you have questions, we answer them. If you need us to stop, we stop.
We also establish a signal, something as simple as raising your hand, that means “pause.” That signal gives you a sense of control. You know that at any moment, you can stop what’s happening and take a break.
Creating a Comfortable Environment
The atmosphere matters more than you might think. Our office is designed to be calm and welcoming, not cold and clinical. We keep noise levels low. We offer headphones with music or podcasts to help you tune out the sounds of treatment. Some patients find that closing their eyes and focusing on their breathing helps them stay relaxed.
We also use topical numbing gel before any injections so you barely feel the needle. We go slowly and check in with you frequently to make sure you’re comfortable.
Sedation Options for Deeper Relaxation
For patients with significant anxiety, we offer sedation options that go beyond local numbing.
Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is a mild sedative you inhale through a small mask. It takes effect quickly and wears off just as fast. You remain awake and responsive, but you feel deeply relaxed. Many patients describe feeling like they just don’t care about what’s happening.
For patients who need more support, we offer oral conscious sedation. You take a prescribed pill about an hour before your appointment. By the time you arrive, you’re calm and drowsy. You may not remember much of the procedure afterward. You will need someone to drive you home, but many patients find this option makes treatment possible when nothing else has.
You’re in Control
You are in control of your treatment. We don’t rush you. We don’t push you. If you need to take a break, we take a break. If you decide you’re not ready for a procedure today, that’s okay.
Your first appointment with us is often just a conversation. We talk about your concerns, your goals, and what would make you most comfortable. There’s no pressure to commit to treatment before you’re ready.
It’s Never Too Late
If fear has been keeping you from the care you need, we hope you’ll give us a chance. We’ve worked with many patients who were convinced they could never sit in a dental chair. Today, some of them even nap through their appointments.
Our team at AH Smiles serves patients from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Deerfield, and Northbrook. Give us a call. We’ll listen, we’ll respect your fears, and we’ll help you find a path forward at your own pace.
