When you think about going to the dentist, you probably don’t think about technology. You think about the chair, the bright light, and the sound of the drill. But behind the scenes, technology in modern dentistry has changed dramatically in the last decade. And those changes benefit you in ways you might not realize.
At AH Smiles, we’ve invested in digital tools that make your visits faster, more comfortable, and more precise. Let us walk you through some of the technology we use and why it matters.

Digital X-Rays: Better Images, Less Radiation
Traditional dental X-rays used film, just like an old camera. They required chemical processing, took time to develop, and exposed patients to higher radiation doses.
Digital X-rays changed all of that. Instead of film, we use a small electronic sensor that captures the image instantly. It appears on a computer screen within seconds.
Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film. That’s better for your safety, especially if you need multiple images. The images are clearer and more detailed. We can zoom in, adjust contrast, and see things that might have been missed on film. And because the images are digital, we can show them to you on the screen and explain what we’re seeing. No more holding a tiny film up to the light.
Intraoral Scanners: Goodbye to Goopy Impressions
If you’ve ever had a crown or Invisalign, you probably remember the impression process. A tray filled with goopy material gets pressed into your mouth, and you have to hold still while it sets. It’s uncomfortable. It can trigger your gag reflex. And the results aren’t always perfect.
We use intraoral scanners instead. A small handheld wand captures a precise 3D image of your teeth and gums. No goop. No trays. No gagging. Just a quick scan that takes a few minutes.
The scan is more accurate than a traditional impression, so you get better-fitting crowns, bridges, and aligners. And because it’s digital, we can send it directly to the lab or use it to design your restoration right here in the office.
CAD/CAM Technology: Same-Day Restorations
CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. In simple terms, it means we can design and create certain restorations, like crowns, right here in our office.
After we scan your tooth, we use software to design the restoration on a computer. We send that design to a milling machine that carves the restoration from a block of ceramic. The whole process takes about an hour.
For patients, the benefit is obvious. Instead of waiting two weeks for a lab to make your crown, you can often get it the same day. One appointment. One visit. And you could walk out with a permanent restoration.
Digital Smile Design: Seeing Your Results Before We Start
This is one of our favorite tools because patients love it. Digital Smile Design allows us to show you what your new smile could look like before we ever touch your teeth.
We take digital photos and scans, then use specialized software to simulate the changes. You can see how different shapes, sizes, or colors would look on your face. You can give feedback. We can adjust.
It takes the guesswork out of cosmetic dentistry. You know what you’re getting before you commit.
What This Means for You
All this technology isn’t about gadgets. It’s about you. Better diagnostics mean we catch problems earlier. More precise tools mean better-fitting restorations. Faster processes mean fewer appointments and less time in the chair.
We invest in technology because it helps us provide better care. And better care means a better experience for you.
Our team at AH Smiles serves patients from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Deerfield, and Northbrook. If you have questions about the technology we use or want to schedule a visit, call us. We’d love to show you how modern dentistry can make a difference.
