What made you pursue a career in dentistry?
“Growing up in Indianapolis, my father was (and still is!) an optometrist, and I knew that I wanted to be in healthcare, but thought that dentistry would be more exciting. As the years went by, and several family friends were dentists, I began to develop an interest in dentistry. I probably shadowed 10 dental practices to confirm that this was something that I would enjoy as a career during my high school and college years. By the time I entered college, I knew that dentistry was a perfect fit for what I wanted to accomplish in my career. Honestly, I’ve always been a “neat and clean” person who likes things orderly, and being a good dentist requires attention to detail and precision.”
What is your favorite thing about being a dentist?
“Being a dentist is the perfect profession for me–I didn’t know that I would love it this much when I started practicing, but I am so happy that this is what I do. I enjoy forming relationships with patients and problem-solving, as well as interacting with 30 or more different people each day. I also really enjoy being social and dentistry certainly allows for unique conversations, “fixing” things predictably and blending artistry with dentistry.”
What service do you enjoy providing for patients the most? Why?
“Any restorative dentistry, but especially cosmetic dentistry. I do not mean to dramatize this, but when a patient receives a beautiful smile after years of struggles, it is life-changing. Probably 50% of this is from the talented ceramists I am lucky to be able to work with, but I know that I was able to quarterback the entire process and take a fearful or self-conscious patient who has real dental issues and predictably transform them into a confident, happy, and smiling person. That is so special to me.”
What is the best piece of dental advice that you have to offer your patients?
“We are here to help! Keep in mind that prevention really is the key to oral health. Be consistent in making and keeping regular cleaning and maintenance appointments so if there is an issue, it can be corrected in a simple way. Waiting for pain or a real problem is NOT good for anyone.”
What is a fun fact about yourself that many patients do not know?
“I am 6’8″ and love landscaping, Phish (the band), classical music, and basketball as hobbies out of the practice. My wife Megan and I have three terrific children, 14-year-old Charlie and twins Emma and Laney who are 12 this week…..our children’s activities are our favorite events to attend.”
